Supporting Our Conservation Family
|
|
Earlier this month, four of Kaua'i’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) employees were let go as a result of mass firing impacting approximately 420 USFWS employees nationwide. The individuals on Kaua'i include the entire team of biologists within the National Wildlife Refuge System. This loss hits an organization that is already underfunded and lacking sufficient staffing and operational support, a situation familiar to many conservation and environmental teams. These individuals, and USFWS at large, do invaluable work monitoring, protecting, and maintaining Kaua'i’s refuge system. We are devastated by what this means for the wellbeing of refuge land as well as the refuge staff tasked with making operations work without their biology team and a critical maintenance crew member. We encourage everyone to sign up for the Friends of Kaua’i Wildlife Refuges’ newsletter or follow them on Instagram to stay up-to-date and learn how best to support Kaua’i’s refuges.

Last month SOS admitted an uncommon species at our facility: an ‘ā / Masked Booby! While we admit Red-footed and Brown Boobies regularly, this is the first time we have admitted a Masked Booby according to our records.
Upon intake, this patient was lethargic, thin, and had a corneal ulcer, as well as what appeared to be minor trauma to the other eye. We provided supplemental heat and supportive care as we worked to get this patient’s weight up. The bird slowly began to perk up, and once his/her temperature had stabilized, she was able to pool! Once she is properly waterproofed, she will be ready for release!
* Did you know the Red-footed, Brown, and Masked Booby share ‘ā as their names in ‘Ōlelo Hawai'i? For clarity, we have used their English common names in this section.

Whether it be from the wide array of cases we get through our doors or from the latest research, there’s always something new to learn in the field of wildlife rehabilitation. One of the ways in which SOS ensures it stays up-to-date on wildlife rehabilitation’s best practices is by attending the annual National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) Symposium. As an organization, NWRA is dedicated to fostering the growth of wildlife rehabilitation and sets the standards for the field.
This year, SOS’s Program Director and Senior Program Manager attended the conference. They were able to connect with hundreds of wildlife rehabilitators as they attended presentations, built skills, and strengthened relationships within the field. Attending conferences like NWRA’s is vital to SOS’s mission of providing high quality care to our patients in committing time to exchanging knowledge with our peers and bringing back new ways to continue elevating our program.

Kaua’i Forest Bird Recovery Project (KFBRP)
Earlier this month, KFBRP executed its first release of male mosquitos among the Alakaʻi Plateau in their efforts to save Kaua’i’s native forest birds. You can learn more about KFBRP and the Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) they employ to safely suppress mosquito populations here.
Conservation at Hawai’i Community College Hawai’i Community College is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Tropical Ecosystem and Agroforestry Management (TEAM) Program. The program trains students with associate of science degrees in a wide breadth of conservation skills while integrating Hawaiian cultural knowledge.

SOS is an Unincorporated Nonprofit Association and fiscally sponsored by the Hawai'i Wildlife Center, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, non-profit organization.
As the only Federal and State permitted wildlife facility on Kaua‘i, Save Our Shearwaters provides life-saving care to Hawai'i’s native birds in need. When you donate, you help us continue to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native wildlife. Mahalo nui loa from all of us at SOS (our feathered friends included)!
