We’ve been spending our May trying to catch our breath from some crazy April intake numbers! Last month we admitted 37 patients, 16 of which were nēnē/ Hawaiian Geese. In total, we admitted 13 different species and throughout the month we had an average of over 15 patients in care each day. On our busiest day, we admitted 8 patients and had a total of 22 birds in care! These numbers highlight how our program has grown from strictly shearwater and petrel response in the early days to a year-round rehabilitation effort for all native species. We no longer get an “off-season” outside of shearwater fallout times. They sure keep us busy!
That being said, keep an eye out in the next month or so if you’re interested in helping out our native feathered friends. We will be recruiting volunteer transporters who can make a firm commitment at least one day a week to check aid stations and transport injured birds to SOS (Hanalei to Wailua or Kekaha to Wailua) from September 15th to December 15th. Training would be required. If you already know you’re interested - reach out on the contact form on our website! Stay tuned for specific requirements for these new volunteer positions.
