Big Start to Fallout Season

October was a very busy month for us at SOS! Over the last ten years, we received an average of 56 'a'o within the first month of fallout season. This year we received 124 a'o' within the first month, and they all came within a two week period! On our busiest day we admitted 22 birds and had a total of 58 birds in care 😱

It's hard to believe that an 8x40 shipping container makes up our only exam room and indoor space for patient holding! This space has helped us rehabilitate and release hundreds of native birds this year, and that number continues to climb each day. We look forward to sharing more about the patients that have come through our doors in 2023 and how we can keep growing to meet the needs of all of Kauai's native birds in need in 2024.

Annual Pule

Another successful E Ho'opomaika'i 'ia na Manu 'A'o, or the Annual Newell’s Shearwater Release Blessing, was held on October 18th. Each year SOS helps facilitate a pule / blessing and release of fledgling 'a'o as Fallout Season starts to pick up. The Kaua'i Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, Kumu Sabra Kauka, PMRF Executive Officer Cdr. Kacee Jossis, and keiki from a local school helped us send rehabilitated 'a'o out to sea. Lahaina Updates

The west side of Maui - aside from burned out sections of Lahaina - reopened fully on November 1st, but there is still a lot of rebuilding to be done after the devastating fires. Many residents are still in need of housing, in addition to other resources. You can stay updated on how to help by visiting Maui Rapid Response or Hawai'i Community Fund.

In response to the need for housing, a Maui native developed a website to connect landlords and homeowners in search for long-term housing.

Lahaina's historic Banyan tree that was charred in the fire has shown signs of life with new leaves sprouting.

SOS is an Unincorporated Nonprofit Association and fiscally sponsored by the Hawai'i Wildlife Center, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, non-profit organization.

As the only Federal and State permitted wildlife facility on Kaua‘i, Save Our Shearwaters provides life-saving care to Hawai'i’s native birds in need.
